Entertainment Studios with Byron Allen: Transcripts

Interview 1: Transcribed by Summer
BA: Courteney!(Shakes her hand)
CC: Hey
BA: How are you doing?
CC: I'm great, thanks
BA: Good to see you
CC: Good to see you
BA: You know, I think we met many years ago, down at Universal Studios. Did you do 'Family Ties' out there?
CC: (Shakes head) No, I did that at Paramount. I was doing, um, 'Misfits of Science', that was many years ago.
BA: Okay, yeah, we're talking '83-'84?
CC: (Thinks for a second) Yes, exactly
BA: See, there you go. Where are you from? Birmingham?
CC: Uh huh, Birmingham, Alabama.
BA: Then where did you go after that, New York? LA?
CC: I went to New York and I lived there for four year and then I came to LA.
BA: Ah. Now, did you have odd jobs when you first came to town?
CC:.....Yes. Well, I worked at a music agency in New York. I was, um, an agent's assistant, and, um, for a rock band. We booked there tours and things. So that was fun.
BA: That is fun. So you got the backstage pass. You were rockin' and rollin'.
CC: Yeah, I hit The Peppermint Lounge and The Ritz and all those clubs in New York to the point where, I can't even see concerts anymore. I used to, um, be responsible for the tickets too, so.....that whole, "Too many people too much stuff." There's just very few concerts that I'll go to now.
BA: You know, I guess my first memory of you was in the, uh, Bruce Springsteen video. How did that come about for you?
CC: Just a regular audition I had. Like, a commercial audition. I went in and met with Brian De Palma and danced for him.....and not well, might I add, and got the job. It was just like a commercial essentially.
BA: What season are we into on 'Friends'?
CC: We're in our third season.
BA: Okay, now "Monica".
CC: (smiles) "Monica".
BA: You having a good time playing "Monica"?
CC: Yeah, Monica's really getting, kind of crazy this year, I love that. She's,um, just such a control freak, and it's so much fun to play. 'Cause it doesn't matter what it is, she's becomming obsessed about everything and it changes every week, I love that. I love that she's getting kookier and wackier, and, just.....she's nuts!
[A 'Friends' clip begins playing]
BA: Now, can you relate to her in any way, shape, or form?
CC: Oh, yeah. Sure. I relate to a lot of the things that she does.
BA: Okay.
CC: I just go and act them out!
BA: Like what?
CC: Well, I'm a little competitive, and I don't know if I would have been that much of a tomboy doing it, but I have a brother, and I wouldn't mind
beating him. There's a lot of things, I guess. Like, it's coming out that she's obsessed with, um, cookies, Girl Scout cookies, and she gets kind of obsessed about eating them, like, it's her drug. I mean, let's face it, who doesn't like the occasional cookie. (softly) Or, ten boxes.
BA: Yeah, I have a weakness for chocolate chip cookies.
CC: Yeah, me too.
BA: How many kids do your parents have?
CC: There are four kids in my family, but, um, my parents are divorced, and both people, both parents, married into kids. So my mom has five new kids, or step kids, and my dad has four.
BA: Now, 'Scream'.
CC: Yes.
BA: Are you a fan of horror movie?
CC: I love horror movies. Not all of them though, but this kind of film I love. You know, you actually want to know who.....murdered everyone, in this case.
BA: (laughing) Yeah.
CC: Yeah, I, uh, I love to be scared, and this movie is, uh, it kind of has everything. It's funny, it's scary, it's got a little bit of everything. But some movies, slasher movies, no! I may go for a kick, but it's not really my type. This is just completely different.
['Scream' clip plays]
BA: I love your character, Gale Weathers.
CC: Mm, hm.
BA: The newscaster.
CC: Gail's just a very manipulative, out for herself type woman. And, it's not so much about the story as it is about about her becomming successful and famous. And, I just, I really dug playing her. It was really fun.
BA: Yeah, it looks like you had a good time.
CC: Yeah, I had a great time.
BA: Okay, now how are the guys treating you?
CC: (confused)On the show?
BA: No!
CC: Oh, in general? (jokingly) Interesting, because they're really mean to me. No.
BA: Well how are the guys on the show treating you?
CC: Well, they make fun. No, in general?
Oh, I don't know, all men are all right, I guess.
BA: Don't say all men are all right, you're gonna get thousands of letters!
CC: (nervously) No! I mean, no! I don' know! I don't have anyone imparticular to talk about, so I just give it a general thumbs up. All men are all right! I don't know!(giggiling)
BA: Here's Courteney up-dating: All men are all right.
CC: (nervously laughing) No, that's actually not true is it?
BA: No
CC: No, it's not.
BA: Okay.
CC: All right.
BA: Well.....look at you! What's got you so nervous?
CC: (speaking very nervously, stroking her hair) Just, you know, thinking about that guy thing, makes me a little nervous. (giggiling)
BA: It's okay.
CC: It's all right.
BA: As a matter of fact, we'll do it right now. 1-800-CALL-COURTENEY
CC: That's right.
BA: Okay.
CC: See ya.
BA: See ya.
CC: Bye.
